Care-A-Van Campaign Passes $1 Million Milestone

Sr. Patricia Heath, SUSCThis issue celebrates your giving’s direct impact on our mobile health ministry

Sometimes when we think of those who cannot afford health insurance, we feel sympathy, but also some cynicism. I’ve heard people question why these individuals don’t work and pay for their own care.

What we’ve learned in the last two years of providing free services through our Care-AVan mobile ministry is that many of our patients are employed. Many have positions that have been cut back or cut out in the economic downturn. We share this and many other learnings in this special issue of The Spirit, which is dedicated to the Care-A-Van.

You can read about a longshoreman, a hard-working middleaged man who had his hours reduced and his ability to gain insurance destroyed. He comes to Care-A-Van to manage his blood pressure, but recently, Dr. Price and her team discovered that the man had a suspicious mole on his back.

Because of their care and referral, the man has been diagnosed with cancer. Hopefully, he will have a chance to beat cancer, instead of the disease remaining undiscovered and taking over.

Another woman, Ms. Jones, recently called our Foundations to thank us for the Care-AVan. She works but has no insurance and no resources to pay. Her husband was tragically killed a few years ago, and she cries as she recounts her loss.

These are just two of our many, many hardworking neighbors who find themselves without health insurance. But thanks to you, our donors, they are not without hope. Because of your generosity, they receive health care and dignity in a world that’s often very hard for those with limited resources.

Ms. Jones sums up the gratitude I also feel: “Speaking on behalf of the patients, ‘Thank you so much. Please keep doing the wonderful work you do for the community.’”
