A Case Statement for Expanding the St. Mary’s Hospital Forensic Nurse Examiner Program

Overview

The goal of forensic nursing is to provide the best and most appropriate nursing care for victims of sexual assault, interpersonal violence, neglect, or other forms of intentional injury. Victims arrive at the hospital for treatment of injuries both physical and psychological. Forensic Nurse Examiners must execute a rigorous checklist of emergency medicine that must be executed with gentle precision and comforting compassion. Forensic Nurse Examiners must: repair physical injuries; treat emotional trauma and psychological damage while collecting and preserving forensic evidence for police/legal investigations. These specially trained, certified forensic nurse examiners are able to reduce re-traumatization and re-victimization of their patients and improve the quality of forensic evidence collection, which in turn increases prosecution rates of offenders.
