Program Impact

The St. Mary’s Forensic Nurse Examiner Program is about changing lives; it’s about giving back to our patients some sense of the control they lost during their attack. The impact the program has had on our patients and partners is best described in their own words.

“My eyes and mouth were swollen shut, and I could hardly speak. It was like it wasn’t real, but then I knew it was and I started to panic. The nurse who helped me was so kind. She didn’t judge me at all. She got me through it and told me I would and could survive. And I did.”

“I was one of the lucky ones because my attacker was caught. The St. Mary’s nurse testified in court for me, which helped send the defendant to prison for a long time. Without her collecting that evidence and telling me about support groups out there that could help me, I would not have made it.”

“I just wanted to thank you for your warmth and kindness that you showed our family. It was such an awful situation and still continues to be difficult, but people like you make it a bit easier. We were so lucky to have a kind nurse during a difficult time.”

“The Forensic Nurse Program of St. Mary’s Hospital creates a valuable bridge between the victim of a heinous assault and law enforcement…This can only be accomplished through top forensic nurse training. Without it, I believe victims will suffer, successful court prosecutions will diminish and, conversely, some criminals will be set free.”

“The core of St. Mary’s Forensic Nursing practice is evidence-based and meets state and national standards. Their instructors and nurses are knowledgeable, courteous, and dedicated to the field of Forensic Nursing and its growth. To maintain consistent practice and to assure our programs meet Virginia State Standards, we have continued to send our nurses to trainings by the Forensic Nurse Examiners of St. Mary’s Hospital. As we develop and expand our programs, we will continue to refer to St. Mary’s practices and mirror them to assure that we have the best program possible.”

“Our program here at Riverside Regional is modeled after the program at St Mary’s. Our policies, procedures and documentation tools are either the same or very close to the one’s used at St Mary’s.  You have been a tremendous resource when we have questions, whether it be about state codes or patient care; you’ve always taken the time to help. On behalf of the forensic nurses here at RRMC, thank you.”

“The Forensic Nursing Program has been hugely beneficial in assisting DCJS to deliver training and technical assistance to Virginia localities regarding the development of mandatory Sexual Assault Response Teams. They collaborate with allied professionals in a way which enhances victim safety and offender accountability.”

“As a pediatric radiologist part of my responsibility is the evaluation for and the detection of nonaccidental trauma or child abuse. A team approach which involves physicians, nurses, law enforcement, and social services is necessary. The forensic nurse team at Bon Secours is essential to this program. The forensic nurses are the hub of the wheel and coordinate all the other essential team members. They are masterful at coordinating all the details which are critical for success. I believe that many children have healthier lives, and are alive, because of their excellent and dedicated work.”
