Kidz ‘N Grief

A Support Group Program for grieving children and their parents or care-givers; part of the Bereavement Program of Bon Secours Hospice at Mary Immaculate Hospital.

KIDZ N’ GRIEF provides concurrent grief support for children ages 3-18 who have lost a loved one to death. Therapists believe that children know how to process their grief if they are in a safe, supportive environment with other children in the same circumstance. Kidz n’ Grief is modeled after the Dougy Center in Portland, Oregon, founded 25 years ago by a pediatric nurse.

Kidz n’ Grief does not provide psychotherapy, but offers support through art, games, stories, play and other activities which promote expression of feelings and thoughts, thus helping children adjust to the physical loss of their loved one.

Kidz ‘N Grief meets in a local church that is centrally located on the Peninsula. The program is open to families from anywhere in the Hampton Roads area. KIDZ ‘N GRIEF meets on the second and fourth Mondays of the month, September through June, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Children may enroll and attend anytime during the year. Also, a weekend camp – “Mikey’s Camp” – is held in the Fall. To enroll, families may contact KIDZ ‘N GRIEF Director Beth Pile at Con Secours Hospice: 757-737-2287

Children participate in age-appropriate groups: 3 to 5 year olds, 6 to 8 year olds, 9 to 12 year olds, and the teens. There are also 3 groups for adults who bring children to Kidz ‘n Grief, as well as a “Volcano Room” to allow children to express their most volatile feelings in a safe place.

Because Kidz ‘n Grief is underwritten by private donations, the program is free-of-charge to all participants.

Mikey’s Camp

Mikey’s Camp provides a supportive environment where children/teens (ages 7-17) can explore the normal process of grief, and where their self-expression is heard, valued, and honored. The camp is staffed by professional grief facilitators and trained volunteers.

The guiding principles of Mikey’s Camp:

  • Grief is a normal process in response to the death of a loved one.
  • Each child has the natural capacity to heal in his or her own time frame.
  • The duration and intensity of grief is unique to each individual.
  • Caring, listening, and acceptance assist in the healing process.

Sponsors for recent camps include Bon Secours Healthcare; Classis Cruisers Car Club; Mason School of Business (Wm. & Mary); VistaGraphics; York County Volunteer Assoc.; local funeral homes and civic organizations; family donations; and proceeds form the book Good Grief written by Kidz ‘n Grief participant Chad Bonadonna. If you or your organization would like to support us financially, please contact Beth Pile at 757-737-2287.

Big Buddy Volunteers:

At Mikey’s Camp each child is paired with an adult Big Buddy. these big buddies provide a unique relationship to companion the children/teens in their grief process. Volunteers are needed as big buddies to the campers and as support staff to assist with many activities.
